Child Abuse and Neglect Certificate

The Certificate in Child Abuse and Neglect requires students to have a grounding in basic theory about human diversity, growth, and development across the life cycle, basic knowledge of the development of public and private social services and specific content on child abuse and neglect and family dynamics. A minimum of 21 credit hours are required (24 for non-BSW) for the certificate, of which 12 credit hours must be from  social work courses.Students are expected to participate in the service learning component of S180 and/or S201 to maximize their learning during coursework.
Once Admitted, Requirements

1. The Child Abuse and Neglect Certificate student will need to maintain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
2. The Child Abuse and Neglect Certificate student must have at least a “C” in core certificate courses.

1. SWK-S 102 Understanding Diversity in a Pluralistic Society (3 cr.)
2. SWK-S 221 Human Growth and Development in the Social Environment (3 cr.) or B 310 Life Span Development (3 cr.)
3. SWK-S 251 History and Analysis of Social Welfare Policy (3 cr.) or Y 213 Introduction to Public Policy (3 cr.)
4. SWK-S 305 Introduction to Child Protection (3 cr.)
5. SWK-S 180 Exploring Child Welfare in Indiana (3 cr.)
6. Non BSW Students are REQUIRED to take SWK-S 201 Introduction to Case Management (3 cr.)
7. Select TWO courses from the list below:
   One Course on Substance Abuse and one course on Families are REQUIRED

1. A regular Admission to the University
2. Applicant needs to have a minimum of 26 credit hours to be considered for admission
3. Currently pursuing of an undergraduate degree or completion of an undergraduate degree
4. A minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Waiver Process
If you do not have 26 hours completed or a GPA of 2.5, please do not allow this to stop you from applying.  However, it does mean that you must include Petition for Exceptional Consideration with your application.
